Dallas, TX | What is periodontal disease? | Drs Hamlett and LaMastra

Periodontal, or gum disease, is one of the most common dental diseases that your dentist sees. Gum disease occurs when hygiene isn't kept up and allows hard deposits of plaque and calculus to build up underneath the gum, drawing your gum away from your tooth. If caught early, your dentist can prevent and treat gum disease through a root planing and scaling, also referred to as a 'deep cleaning' by your dental hygienist. Gum disease can cause other dangerous issues such as heart disease, so make sure you're seeing your dentist regularly!
